Verification as carried out at ECMWF:

The data are analysed using simple statistical tools. Because the number of available buoys is limited, three concecutive months of data are used to produce the results.

Every month, a set of plots and tables are gathered into summary reports accessible to all participants.

Scores:

 

Forecast scores, based on the statistical analysis of the different data sets with respect to the buoy data can be plotted against the different forecast steps. Time series of the scores

The monthly statistics (corresponding to 3 months of data) are also accumulated in simple time series plots as shown below for the the wave height RMSE common to all global centers. Note that some institutions have only recently joined the project.
